Canadian Hydrographic Service
Any professional mariner knows the importance of information made available by the Canadian Hydrographic Service. We stock Atlantic coast publications as well as charts from Halifax to Cape Sable. We can provide any CHS product within 2-3 days. Browse this site, become familliar with all CHS has to offer. Also, remember that Notices to Mariners are free through an email service that you customize to the charts you need to maintain. Simply log on to www.notmar.com and create a User Profile. CHS will send you weekly notices of any corrections to the charts you list in your profile. There is also archived Notices to Mariners information.

Lead in paint. Lead was great for paint performance but we’ve since learned it is awful for your health. Paint no longer contains lead. However, a lot of our older homes have lead paint. We generally advise that you don’t disturb it, just paint over it and encapsulate it. If you decide to remove old oil paint from inside or even outside, read this site. It helps you understand how to contain the health issues.

We are also a dealer for Mercer’s Marine. Mercer’s supply some of our marine hardware and fishing gear. Being a Newfoundland based company they are geared towards the needs of their fishermen which have some different needs than ours do. Their range of products is interesting and dealing with them delightful. Browse their catalogue but remember to check with us first – we may have it in stock. MAS Epoxies
High performance, user friendly (as far as epoxies go!), MAS is an excellent choice for the “Do It Yourselfer” and the professional. We recommend that you visit this site before starting any epoxy job whether you are using MAS or not. There is excellent information on protecting yourself – not to scare you but you should appreciate what you are getting into. Having said that, MAS was formulated to give you the performance you need from an epoxy while reducing to a minimum the adverse side effects that can arise when working with any epoxy.

Paint Quality Institute. We like this site because it has some good problem solving and great advice. Most disappointments with painting jobs are due to incorrect or insufficient preparation or product knowledge. This site helps all of us understand how to get what we want from a can of paint.

We stock Epifanes varnishes and clear finishes. Considered to be the world’s best spar varnish. (We won’t argue with this!) This site provides product overviews. It has has two excellent sections on Advice and Q&A. We recommend you look at this site before commencing any brightwork.

We offer this link for two reasons. First of all, we paint a lot of wood around here, it is what protects most of our homes, especially in this UNESCO world heritage town.
